Hydroflex Branding

Hydroflex

Rebranding the UK's first hydrogen-powered passenger train into a powerful symbol of rail innovation and a more sustainable future.

HydroFLEX, developed by Porterbrook, was created to demonstrate what the future of rail could look like. As the UK’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train, it showcases how existing rolling stock could be re-engineered to embrace cleaner, more sustainable technology.

Our challenge was to create a brand that reflected the significance of that ambition. From the train’s full exterior livery to internal communications, launch materials and exhibition assets, the identity needed to celebrate engineering innovation while helping people understand HydroFLEX’s role in inspiring the next generation of rail technology. The new brand also needed to sit comfortably as part of the Porterbrook rebrand, but stand out in its own right.

The heartbeat
The identity was inspired by the ripple effect that every major innovation has on its own future. Expanding waveforms sweep across the train, creating a sense of movement while representing the influence HydroFLEX could have on the future of rail. Originating from the train’s hydrogen technology, the graphics spread across the livery to express how one engineering breakthrough can inspire change across an entire industry.

A carefully considered colour transition reinforces that narrative, moving from the heritage of steam and coal through diesel and electric to the clean optimism of hydrogen, which then forms the logo at the front of each train. The result is a train that doesn’t simply carry passengers, but carries the story of rail’s continuing evolution.

The impact
HydroFLEX demonstrates that hydrogen could play a meaningful role in the future of Britain’s railways and reinforced Porterbrook’s reputation as a business prepared to invest in bold ideas.

The branding helped elevate a complex engineering project into a compelling public story, creating a memorable presence at exhibitions, demonstrations and industry events. More than simply wrapping a train, it gave HydroFLEX an identity that reflected the scale of its ambition and positioned it as a beacon for innovation, inspiring conversations about what the next chapter of rail could become.
