Porterbrook branding

The driving power of partnership

Through the new brand we helped Porterbrook tell the story it had already been living – the future of rail is built through partnership.

Porterbrook has spent more than 30 years helping shape Britain’s rail industry, but its brand didn’t reflect the business it had become. As the company expanded beyond rolling stock ownership into innovation, engineering and industry partnerships, it needed a brand that better represented its role in the future of rail. Our challenge was to reposition Porterbrook through a modern voice and identity that could inspire employees, strengthen industry perception and create a flexible brand platform for the years ahead.

The heartbeat
Rail has never been built by one organisation. It succeeds when manufacturers, operators, engineers and innovators come together with a shared purpose, in partnership to move everything forward.

That insight became the foundation of the new brand. Rather than focusing on what Porterbrook owns, we focused on what Porterbrook enables. Partnership became both the strategic positioning and the creative idea, brought to life through a distinctive brand mark that symbolises partnership and collaboration in action, inspired by murmurations and unified movement, and a visual identity designed to move confidently across every touchpoint.

We created a complete brand identity, messaging framework and design system that gives Porterbrook a more modern, progressive voice while staying true to its heritage. From launch communications and events, to web design, digital applications and everyday communications, every element was designed to tell one consistent story – the future of rail is built together.

The impact
The new brand has provided Porterbrook with a platform to tell a bigger story about the role the business plays in shaping the future of rail. Its launch coincided with a pivotal moment for the organisation, helping introduce major investments including the new test track at Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre and reinforcing the site’s position as one of the UK’s most important destinations for rail innovation, testing and engineering. The brand created a clear, consistent narrative that connected these developments under a single idea – the driving power of partnership.

From industry events and launch communications to exhibitions and everyday marketing, the identity has given Porterbrook the confidence to present itself as a business that brings organisations together to solve the challenges facing rail. Rather than simply showcasing facilities or capabilities, it now communicates the impact those partnerships have on the industry as a whole.

As Porterbrook continues to invest in new technologies, infrastructure and sustainable transport, the brand provides a flexible foundation that can evolve alongside the business, supporting future innovations while ensuring every new chapter feels unmistakably Porterbrook, rail’s new symbol of partnership.
